Beautiful map of the Second Battle of El Alamein. The map shows the Counter Battery fire of the Eighty British Army led by Field Marshal Montgomery.
The Second Battle of El Alamein took place from the 23rd of October until the 11th of November 1942 near the small village of El Alamein. The battle was the turning point for the North African Campaign and prevented anymore intrusion by Rommel’s Afrika Korps into Egypt and the threat against the Suez Canal.
The opening salvo of the battle started with a 1000 gun creeping barrage, including a massive smoke bombardment to obscure the minefields from the Germans. This allowed the British Engineers to clear lanes for the on coming armoured forces.
At the end of the Battle the German forces had over 30,000 casualties and a full retreat out of Egypt.
